How to Avoid Writer’s Block?

Hey fellow writers!

Welcome to the IABX Wednesday Writing Tip!

Today, we’re tackling a common struggle for writers—writer’s block. Poet William Stafford once suggested that the key to overcoming writer’s block is to “lower your standards and go on.” By letting go of perfectionism and allowing yourself to write freely, you keep the creative process moving forward.

Here are some simple strategies to help you avoid writer’s block:

Don’t Edit While You Write Avoid rereading or editing your work during the first draft. Just focus on getting your ideas down.

Set Writing Goals That Focus on Consistency Instead of stressing over quality, commit to showing up and writing regularly. Over time, your writing will naturally improve.

Create a Writing Routine – Try to write at the same time every day, even if it’s just for ten minutes. This conditions your mind to be ready for creativity.

William Stafford followed a writing routine for nearly 50 years, waking up at 4 AM daily to write. He viewed writing as an exploration, rather than a pursuit of perfection. His words remind us that writing is a journey:

"A writer is not so much someone who has something to say as he is someone who has found a process that will bring about new things he would not have thought of if he had not started to say them."

So, keep writing, keep exploring, and most importantly—keep going!

Happy Writing!
