4 Tips for Writing Quirky Characters

Hey fellow writers!

Welcome to the IABX Wednesday Writing Tip! Today, we explore 4 Tips for Writing Quirky Characters.

When it comes to writing characters that stand out, quirkiness can be the perfect touch to add flavor to your stories. Whether you're writing a romantic comedy or just want to inject some fun into your fiction, crafting unique and memorable characters can bring your narrative to life. Here are four tips from Kerry Winfrey, author of Very Sincerely Yours, to help you create quirky characters that resonate with readers.

1. Draw Inspiration from Real Life

Look around you—people are endlessly fascinating, and everyone has quirks that make them unique. Think about your friends, family, or even yourself. What are the little things that make them different? Use these observations as a foundation to create characters who stand out from the crowd. For example, Winfrey's character Teddy, an adult with a love for a children’s television show, was inspired by her own experiences.

2. Balance Fiction with Fun

Remember, your characters don't have to be realistic—they just need to be entertaining. In the world of fiction, especially in genres like romantic comedies, characters can be larger-than-life without losing their appeal. Winfrey points out how quirky characters, like Kirk from Gilmore Girls, may be annoying in real life but are delightful on screen or in a book.

3. Ground Quirks in Reality

While quirks add charm, they should be balanced by a touch of realism. Pair your quirky characters with those who are more grounded to create a dynamic contrast. In Very Sincerely Yours, the eccentric puppeteer Everett is balanced by his down-to-earth friends, making his quirks more endearing and believable.

4. Give Quirks a Purpose

Every quirk should have a reason behind it. Whether it’s a catchphrase, a fear, or a love of something unusual, these traits should tie into your character's backstory. This not only makes the character more relatable but also adds depth to their personality. For instance, a character might wear bright colors to counteract a difficult life, adding a layer of meaning to their behavior.

These tips may help you add a touch of quirkiness to your characters, making them unforgettable to your readers. Whether you're writing a lighthearted romance or just want to add some levity to your story, a well-crafted quirky character can make all the difference.

Happy Writing!
